What is AVIF?
AVIF is a modern image format based on video compression technology. It often produces smaller files than JPG or WebP at a similar look, and it supports transparency and high quality color. Support is growing in browsers, but many desktop editors, older Windows versions and some online forms still do not recognize it.

Transparent AVIF images
JPG cannot be transparent. If your AVIF has a see-through background, the transparent areas are filled with the color from “Background for transparent areas”. White is the default. If you need to keep transparency, convert to PNG instead.
Expect a bigger file
AVIF compresses very efficiently, so the JPG will usually be larger at the same visual quality. Lower the quality value a little or set “Max width (optional)” if size matters.
Common problems
The picture looks slightly different
AVIF can store wider color information. Small color differences can appear in JPG, so compare on the screen where the image will be used.
An animated AVIF became a still image
JPG has no animation, so only the first frame is kept.
The file will not load
Check that the file really is AVIF and finished downloading. Some browsers save AVIF images with a different extension.
