Expect a bigger file
Because PNG does not discard data, a converted file is commonly several times larger than the JPG, especially for photographs. This is normal. If you are converting only to publish the picture online, a smaller format such as JPG to WebP may suit your goal better. If you want to keep the image small but still need an editable copy, set “Max width (optional)” to a realistic size before converting.
Does JPG to PNG add a transparent background?
No. A JPG has a solid background, and it stays solid after conversion. To make the background transparent you need an editor with a background remover or selection tool, and then you should save the result as PNG so the transparency is kept.
